Thanks. I did as yuo suggested, and now get a slightly different error when I go to the Update Joomla button or the update extensions button:

0 Could not load root metadata.

(BTW, Joomla is up to date and the button says it's up to date. Just trying there in hopes there might be a way to update core joomla and fix this.)
